How Can I Take Control of My OCD?
-
With Exposure and Response Prevention.
This is a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that addresses obsessions and compulsions through exposures and allows you to take the reins of your life back.
The compulsions that you do because of the intrusive and uncomfortable thoughts only minimize the anxiety for a moment.
The anxiety looks like constant waves, up and down, meaning the compulsions don’t actually make the anxiety go away.
What does ERP look like in therapy?
-
gradually that relate to your obsessive thoughts without engaging in any of the compulsions.
This work will be done together in session and outside of the therapy office independently.
By staying in the exposure without doing the compulsion, your body will adjust to the anxiety, which will decrease it and create an understanding that you are safe and anxiety is temporary.
You will never do an exposure that is actually unsafe or where the risk is high.
What are exposures in ERP?
-
Exposures can be done with images, scripts, activities, etc.
The goal of Exposure and Response Prevention is to learn how to tolerate the uncertainty and anxiety by being able to sit with the “what ifs” and not engage in any compulsions.
But, the most important goal of ERP is for you to feel back in control and understand that while OCD may try to take charge, you are the one in charge and you have the ability to ignore when OCD is trying to bully you.
What to expect in Exposure and Response Prevention
-
Together, we will make a hierarchy from least amount of anxiety towards an exposure to the highest amount of anxiety. From there, we will work together to gradually work from the bottom up.
-
At the beginning of each session, I will check in with you on the homework that was assigned in between sessions.
-
We will process what was learned while doing the exposure homework and if you have any questions about it.
-
After checking in on the homework in between sessions and process what was learned, we will do a quick check in on the progress that has been made thus far. It is important to see what mountains you have already climbed in this challenging work!
-
We will complete an in session exposure together that has been agreed upon during our collaboration. This exposure will take place for 20 to 30 minutes. During the exposure, you will be confronted with an anxiety inducing obsession and will continue to face the anxiety throughout that time without engaging in any compulsions.
-
You will be given homework to complete in between sessions again. This typically follows the same exposure that was completed in session but may include others as well. The goal is to continue exposures to allow your body to become habituated to the anxiety of the obsessions without engaging in compulsions.
-
After the exposure, we will take some time at the end of the session to reflect on what was learned during the exposure that was completed during our session. This is similar to the checking and processing done at the beginning of the session.
Stand up to your OCD through ERP
Exposure and Response Prevention is a highly effective therapy treatment for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
It teaches your brain how to override the fear and anxiety related to the obsessions and compulsions that you struggle with.
You will notice finally being able to tolerate the uncertainty of the obsessions and not engage in the compulsions once you learn that the compulsions do not give you any relief.
